1. JAMES MADISON9 HATCHETT (JOHN8, THOMAS7, EDWARD6, JOHN5, THOMAS4, RICHARD3, STEPHEN2, RICHARD1) was born Abt. 1812 in Maury Co., Tennessee, and died April 1866 in Obion Co., Tennessee. He married SARAH ANN WAGSTER, daughter of JOHN WAGSTER and JANE CRITTENDEN. She was born Abt. 1819 in Tennessee.

James Madison Hatchett B. 1812, Bedford Tn D. April 1866 Obion Co., TN. James was a farmer and belonged to the Primitive Baptist Church and lived in Tiptonvill and Union City, Tn before moving to Carroll Co. MO 1859. Married Sarah Wagster . Children:

From Carole Boyd: James Madison Hatchett, son of John and Judith (Judieth) Foster Hatchett, was born in either Bedford County or Maury County, Tennessee, ca. 1812. He was married to Sarah Wagster, daughter of John and Jane Crittenden Wagster. In 1860 John Wagster was 77 years old and gave NC as his birth state. Jane was 74 and gave NC as her birth state.

James Madison Hatchett was a farmer and lived in central and northwest Tennessee. He was mistreated by the soldiers washing across from his place during the Civil War and died as an indirect result of his treatment. There are several letters that he wrote still in the possession of his descendants. He mentioned a notebook in which he kept records, but its whereabouts is not known.

In the 1840 census record of Maury County, Tennessee, he lists: 2 males under 5, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 20-30, 6 slaves engaged in agriculture.

In the 1850 census of Warren County, Tennessee, (Tennessee, WARREN, Roll 898 Book 1, Page 86a) he lists: James 38 Tennessee, Sarah 31, Tennessee, John C. 13 Tennessee, Joel 11 Tennessee, Frederick E. 9 Tennessee, Mahala 6 Tennessee, Mary 3 Tennessee, Love J. 1 Tennessee.

In the Oct 16, 1860. census of Obion County, Tennessee, he lists: J. M. 48 Tennessee, Sarah, 40 Tennessee, Joel Hale 21, Tennessee, Frederick E. 19, Tennessee, Mahala W. 16 Tennessee, Mary E. 14 Tennessee, Lovie J. 12 Tennessee, Sarah H. 10 Tennessee, Kiddy Adelaide 6 Tennessee, James Clitus 2 Tennessee.

Notes for JOEL HALE HATCHETT:
From Carole Boyd: Joel Hale Hatchett enlisted in the Tennessee Infantry on Oct. 15, 1862, at Union City, Tennessee. On January 19, 1864, he gave his age as 22. He was captured at Perryville, Kentucky, and gave his age as 23. On December 5, 1862, he was sent to Vicksburg, Mississippi, via Cairo, Illinois, for exchange. From July 7, 1863, until September 1863, he was reported as sick in the hospital. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant, then to Second Lieutenant. He was paroled with the rest of his company on April 26, 1865, at Greensboro, North Carolina.
