BROWN |
28 May 2010 |
My Great Great Grandfather
William (W. B.) Smith married an Indian woman, I believe from across
the river from present day Chattanooga, Tennessee. I believe that
Millie was a Brown. (Some of the Brown Indians were fairly well
off, having taken, I believe, 2500 acres, when the Cherokee sold the
land west of the Tennessee River in 1818.
Both Wm and Millie were born in 1810. I have never been able to find the Indian connection. I have a photograph of Millie. She has the 3rd (Asian) eyefold. I have a photograph of a Cousin Virgil Brown sent to Millie's son Christopher Columbus "Lum" Smith. I have never been able to locate Virgil Brown. [See photo here] I have a photograph of two pages of an 1885 letter M.A. Brown, Machinist, Dublin TX (his letterhead) sent to "Lum". (I have transcribed the letter.) Apparently Lum had been inquiring about the opportunities of moving to Texas. [See letter here] I would appreciate receiving any information on M.A. Brown. I did find a cemetery entry at Pleasant Point Cemetery for M. A and his wife Agnes E but no further information. |

McMEANS, WEST, TINKLE | 24 May 2018 | Jean Black |
Jasper and Mattie
lived in Stockdale in the early 1900s.
They had a house and a fruit orchard.
Their son, my grandfather James Martin McMeans, was one of 13
children belonging to this couple.
One of the other sons delivered the mail during the
depression. They were a
close knit family who took care of each other through the
depression.I have a lot of info on this family all the way back to
the early 1800s in Alabama if anyone was interested. |
MAHAN, FORD | 28 Oct 2014 | Amber Mahan Vaughn |
I am researching James Thomas Mahan aka Jim or J.T. and his wife Angie Ford. These are my great grandparents and so little is known about them. (No one in my family has even ever seen a picture of them) any advice on how to start research on them in Erath county to obtain the most information on them? I know they lived in Erath county from approximately 1880 to approximately 1902. Any help or advice is very much appreciated. |
POE, LEATHERMAN, ARENDELL, ARNOLD, PARKER |
16 Nov 2011 | Rosa Quinton | My great grandmother Martha Caroline Poe - Parker, had a brother John Jones Poe. Their parents were Jesse Martin Poe and Fanny G. Jones - Poe. John Jones Poe's great, great grand daughter has contacted me in hopes I can help her find where John Jones Poe died and possibly where he is buried. The last place we find him is in Callahan County in 1880 with his wife Mary Susan Arendell (Arnold)- Poe and their daughter Sarah. We can not find John Jones Poe or his daughter Sarah ever again. We know that Mary Susan Aredell (Arnold)-Poe was ill and died in the Terrell State hospital in 1894. There was another daughter Callie that died in 1899 in a house fire in Selden with her adopted father Samuel T. Leatherman, she was 11 years old at that time. Edgar Poe , son of John Jones Poe is living in Erath County in 1910 with his maternal bachelor uncle John Arnold (Arendell). I posted an query in Callahan county and was advised that I should look in Erath, since that is the last place I found John Jones Poe's family. There was a Leatherman listed on the 1880 census a few familes above John Jones and Mary Susan. Any information would be appreciated so very much. Thank you. |
PURSE, PERSE | 16 Jan 2017 | Ramona Brown |
I am interested in learning anything about the Purse/Perse Family. William R. and Rhoda Purse. They had children, Charles, George, Ruth Ann Cora and William Monroe. They had another child that had left the home Mary Polly Purse and a child Frank that wasn't born yet in 1860. They were on the Census of Erath County in 1860. They may have lived near the Satchell family. The Satchell Family and the Purses were both born in New York so it makes me think they may have been related in some way. Any information would be greatly appreciated. William and Rhoda are my great-great-great grandparents. |

TOWNSEND |
07 Oct 2011 |
I am looking
for information or a photo of Abner Watson Townsend, who was instrumental
in the formation of the First Christian Church at Dublin (he is my great
great grandfather's brother); Dublin Progress, October 31, 1984, pg 1 First Christian Homecoming Sunday, October 1, will be an important day in the life of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, of Dublin. On that day the congregation will celebrate its Homecoming and Rally Day observance. Former members and friends of the congregation are invited to join them in worship and fellowship. Morning worship will begin at 9:45 a.m. with Sunday School, morning worship at 11 a.m. and a pot luck dinner at noon. For one hundred and five years, the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been proclaimed in word and action by First Christian Church of Dublin, Texas. In 1884, a group meeting for worship, in the home of A. W. Townsend, invited a Disciples of Christ evangelist to hold a series of meetings in Dublin. Those successful services of worship, singing and preaching gave birth to First Christian Church of Dublin. The evangelist is remembered only by his nickname, "Weeping Joe." On November 6, 1889, A. W. Townsend and his heirs conveyed "one certain lot" to G. M. Robibnson, W. T. Miller, and J. W. Clements, trustees of First Christian Church, and the successors, to be held and kept in trust for the use of the First Christian Church. |
